Sometimes nature saves the best for last. After a couple of hours of wandering around on a hot muggy morning with nothing much to show for it we came across this heron. It had its back to us at first but slowly turned sideways concentrating on the water. The lake is full of small catfish and he waited patiently for one to swim by. We were happy to be standing in the shade and waited along with him. Before too long he caught one and I walked away the first decent shots of the day.

What a great shot your first one is. The action of the water running from the heron’s bill and the reflections in the water captures beautifully a moment in it’s life.

They are among my favorite birds. I once saw one swallow a rodent!

They are beautiful birds. Around here they seem to like dragonflies and fish!

They like fish here too. I saw one eat a rodent up in the foothills. I saw the lump in its throat too! Ewe!

Its always fantastic to catch nature in action, and these are superb photographs Belinda. We have Grey Herons here, which look kind of similar. I see them on the canal, or near the river. Sometimes they are bold and you can see them on the rooftops nearby.

Thank you so much. I love to watch heron fish, as they’re single-minded and tolerate your presence.
