A few days earlier I had taken a head shot of a female wood duck and was looking for a similar head shot of a male. When I saw this male wood duck in the half light, I knew that my project would have to be put on hold. The light illuminated his body beautifully but his head was far too dark and the background too bright. I made some adjustments in Photoshop using Levels for contrast and Luminance Masks to darken the background and brighten the bird.

Personally, I think you did a beautiful job of processing this lovely photo. Despite the fact that his brilliant colors are not in evidence, these muted soft colors are truly luminescent.

Light shines beautifully on this duck and glorifies him! However, I’ve always wondered about how you can identify a male or a female in birds where it might be slightly less obvious! Or is it obvious in this case? Maybe you can tell me how, since you seem to know birds and animals way better than I. Thank you so much for your help! 🙂

Thank you. Male birds are generally more colourful than the females.

Why, yes that’s true! I have noticed that in a few birds like the peacocks for example. However, in birds like the sparrows or the pigeons, I wonder how one would spot the female/male!

Even sparrows vary in colour. Some birds though when not in breeding colours, can look like a different species. A good reference book is a good investment😊

This is such a beautiful and detailed shot Belinda, and you have balanced the light perfectly. His colours are rather handsome.
