Damselflies are at their height in July but we have seen them earlier in the season and often well into August. These insects seem to symbolize summer and remind me of the warm sunny day when I took these photographs. I believe the damselfly in the first shot is a spreadwing, not as common as the bluets in the second photo. I think one of the bluets is having a snack, a bit distracted from the business at hand.

Very nice shots. I usually don’t photograph them, but after seeing yours I did attempt a few (mixed results). I have noticed a species in our swamps here, about the size of a small plane. Most likely the type our Kites feed on. No photos yet though, usually too fast and high. BTW, Kites are a southern bird, none north I know of, that feed on insects in mid air. A decent size raptor.

Thank you, they’re fun to take. If startled they will often fly back to the same perch they just vacated. I’d love to capture a kite catching one of these insects!

What I find amazing is a large raptor, living on insects primarily. And…Catch them midair with their feet. I watch it in awe.
