The woods around us boast two species of squirrels: the red squirrel and the eastern grey squirrel, both grey and black varieties (pictured below). With the cold weather settling in it’s a busy time for them. They’re out in force collecting food for the long winter ahead. The sound of the squirrels scurrying through the woods can even muffle the birdsong that we’re straining to hear.

  6. Wonderful to have two species, Belinda. Lately our squirrels have been so very busy preparing for the winter, I like knowing the same is going on in your woods. And that grey one certainly looks well-fed! Wonderful photos~~

  7. Nice healthy specimens! It’s great you got a shot of the black one, we occasionally see one around here, too.

  9. Beautiful photos with wonderful autumnal colours! We have lots of grey squirrels in the woods around here, and they sometimes visit the bird feeders, but only rarely. I always enjoy seeing them on my walks, but they are considered a pest here.
