The ring-billed gull is the most common of gulls and not a bird I often think of photographing. Someone by the waterfront had been feeding the ducks and the gulls were flying overhead hoping to benefit too. I took some photos as they circled around. The second shot was taken at a local park. I thought the red maple leaf added a bit of interest to the scene. It seems we often overlook the ordinary when we’re taking photographs. The more I take photos the more I appreciate the importance of composing in-camera and thinking about how I’m going to edit the photo. At this rate I’ll never run out of things to take!

  1. Birds in flight are a very special category. I really like the contrast in angles between the gull’s wings and the background. (Lily pads?)

  8. great capture – well caught as they say as the bird is just in the right place and obviously going at some speed

  9. I like the way the seagull is the clear focus in the first photo and the background is blurred. Any subject can be made beautiful and you’re good at this.

  10. I always enjoy gulls. Photographing and just watching. The way I first started getting in flight shots was to practice on the gulls.

  11. Nice pics. I too have progressed in my photography and try to compose in-camera. It definitely saves time in post production.

  12. This amused me because I came home from the beach last weekend with about 20 photos of ring-billed gulls that I then had to weed through.

  15. There’s beauty even in the ordinary and the easily overlooked. Lovely in-flight shot of the gull – looks so relaxed in its flying. And the gull in the park has appeal as well. I enjoy finding new ways to look at the “ordinary.” 🙂

  16. Superb flight image – and a bird that (rarely) occurs here too.
