These photos were taken in July when the sun was warm and the lake was full of life. We saw painted turtles everywhere, basking in the sun or swimming in the water. Summer is long over and it’s been several months since we’ve seen any. They’re likely hibernating at the bottom of the lake waiting for winter to set in. The group in the first photo were making the most of the short summer and seemed to be admiring the water lily across the way.

A lovely capture, Belinda. You must have been really sneaky to keep from scaring them away.

Thanks! By mid summer the turtles aren’t too skittish but I do walk quietly.

Love seeing basking turtles – reminds me of the wonderful warm days of summer, which I miss a lot! Nice detail in the second photo- look at those claws!

Love your first shot. It looks like they’re just waiting for the blank gun to go off to start the race!

Superb Painted Turtle shot, Belinda! 🙂 I love Painted Turtles! At the school for the handicapped that i worked at, before i retired, they wanted to dump a couple of Painted Turtles (from a pond they were draining) out into the garbage. I, instead, took them and released them to a huge wild pond that was connected to a rural lake; they were in heaven!

Oh, I love painted turtles. This takes me back to my childhood where I spent many a summer day catching (and releasing!) these beautiful reptiles…. such a gentle creature. Love seeing them lining the log.

I know they’re much bigger but they remind me of our pet red-eared turtle from when I was very young. I think having had a pet turtle makes you love them all.

How cute! You must be stealth; I know it’s difficult to capture a shot. Just love😃. Great composition….

You are so lucky to be able to see these turtles. We have a nearby lake that is supposed to be home to turtles, but I have yet to see any.
