top-down

Two of my favourite subjects are insects and flowers and getting both in one shot was a bonus. I don’t usually like to take photographs at this angle, I prefer straight on shots. However, given the detail and colour in the fly I found the composition interesting. This was taken with my macro lens and flash, a wonderful combination for this kind of photography.

  1. Every flower needs its insect on top. Two of my favorite subjects to photograph too. Lovely image.

  3. Beautiful image, both in terms of the quality of the depiction of the insect, but very much also the overall composition of the image – the insect is on a yellow sponge, with an explosion of white all around. Love the angle the shot is taken from too, and the fact that there is almost nothing to show that this was a flash shot.

  7. Great composition at this angle. I like how you positioned the flower off-center in the frame and that the uneven placement of the petals offsets the symmetry of the fly.

  8. The shimmery gold of that insect is like an expensive dress fabric.

  9. Beautifully done! You controlled the flash well and held both the whites, and yellows in check!

  10. The angle works very well. Everything in the foreground is very sharp, and I like the soft out-of-focus background.

  11. The yellow behind the wings show up the wing structure nicely. Nice photograph.
