This male Bay-breasted warbler, in fine breeding plumage, was migrating through our area last spring. Given the amount of red in his cap, I believe he is a mature bird. Their population is very dependant on the caterpillars of the spruce budworm and other insect infestations and their numbers rise and fall accordingly. They are a little easier to photograph than other warblers as they move about the branches and show themselves a bit more readily.

  3. That is one bird I’d love to see migrating through New Hampshire. I know they pass through but I’ve not been lucky. Love the photo.

  4. Great pics. I have a spot reserved on my Life List for this fella. I grew up in the Great Lakes region, but by the time my skills evolved to the ‘warbler’ level I was gone. Only to read later that I was just miles away from some great spots……another reason to go back. Just not in the winter 😎

  11. Gorgeous! What I would give to see one of his species with my own eyes. I always seem to be where he’s not during spring migration. Persistence will pay off, and borrowing words of the wicked witch of Oz, ‘I’ll get you, my Pretty!’

  15. That second one is hilarious, looks like he’s about to tell you off. I have noticed some birds and ducks get nosy when they hear the shutter clicks.
