The Anemone in the first photo was taken in its prime. The New England Aster in the second, though still lovely, was beginning to fade. It is a more durable wildflower and was around to enjoy and photograph for weeks longer than the first. I used to prefer photographing colourful flowers over the white varieties. However, lowering the exposure brings out the fine detail in white subjects, as in this example, revealing a subtle beauty that holds its own against its more colourful rivals.

I like the slightly tattered beauty of the Aster – photographing flowers that are going over or have gone over can be very rewarding.

Thank you. I do enjoy photographing flowers in the fall as they begin to fade.

These are perfect to see, after a long flowerless winter. Can’t wait for this year’s blooms.

Thanks! I feel the same. I saw my first “almost ready to open” crocus today. More than 2 weeks later than normal.

Yay!!!! I had a surprise the other day too, when we were clearing some brush in a bramble patch and discovered a mini garden of primroses blooming under the mess. (I presume the flowers came from last year’s clean up of another area where they were hiding in the “cleanup weeds” and dumped with the wheelbarrow.)

Great detail on both shots and nice contrast between the “perfect” specimen and the lovely aster that is showing a little more character.

Beautifully done, Belinda! The Anemone is perfection in delicacy, and the New England Aster still holds its beauty as the bloom slowly falls.
