I was very pleased to come across this nuthatch earlier in the month. I’ve only been to the reserve a few times over the winter, so seeing this colourful character after such a long absence was a welcome sight.
I really love these little birds. They are often around the same places as chickadees and have much of the same behaviours towards people – brazen in a fun and saucy way. “Cheeky” is a good word for them. Great picture.

I know they store seeds for later in winter but how they endure the deep freeze is a mystery to me.
