STOPS ALONG THE WAY

SLIPPING INTO SUMMER (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

With all the greyness and rain we’ve had it would be easy to think that summer forgot to arrive this year. So when the sun does shine everyone comes out to enjoy it. I spotted these ladybugs while on a walk in my neighbourhood. We don’t see too many insects in the city centre so I was feeling pretty lucky that afternoon.

  4. Once upon a time (until quite recently I confess) I thought a ladybug was a ladybug was a ladybug. Then I began paying more attention. They’re quite diverse lot. Do you know which one you found? There are about 35 species in Alberta. I can identify 3. The seven-spot was easy (an introduced species that is playing havoc with our native ladybugs). The next two, both native, were harder — eye-spotted ladybug and parentheses ladybug. Now when I spot of red or orange I stop for a closer look. So much to learn!

  5. Wonderful shots! I thought after all the rain we received last week that we would have sunshine the rest of the month, but more rain is on its way today.
