STOPS ALONG THE WAY

PILEATED WOODPECKER

This is the woodpecker I mentioned in a recent post, we saw it last time we were at the reserve. I was a bit of a distance from him, shooting through twigs and branches but with no leaves out yet I did manage to get some clear shots. We heard the woodpecker working away before we saw him. A fellow photographer standing nearby like a beacon led us right to him. We didn’t see the bird’s mate but hope to when we return next time.

  1. Hello (from Paris – France)
I like to discover other country blogs far from mine, with photographs of landscapes and birds, of nature, that I do not know here

What objective do you use to have a view so close and so clear?

  2. They’re yard birds for us, so we get to see them frequently. But this shot is extraordinary! I love the piece of wood hovering behind her in the air. Fun shot. I hope you’re having a wonderful spring, Belinda, and that you are getting out to shoot lots of birds and wildlife! ~ Shannon

  9. Outstanding shot. Has anyone managed to photograph an Ivory-billed since their rediscovery?

  12. Brilliant photo, Belinda. I so love the pileated, with their intensity, and you captured it here with the piece of tree flying out. They bang their head so hard when excavating, that bits of tree and sawdust go everywhere. Sometimes I come upon a tree where the pileated has been but is now gone, I can tell they’ve been there with the sawdust and tree pieces in its wake. Thanks for giving us this moment with the pileated.

  15. They are fun to watch when they hammer away at a punky tree trunk and the chips are flying. I also enjoy watching them chase each other around and around the trunk of a tree, hopping and clinging to the bark. And when they fly, it is with great dips. Did I mention that I love their call too. Wonderful birds, always good subjects for a photo. Great shot, Belinda.
