STOPS ALONG THE WAY

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER (TWO PHOTOGRAPHS)

These photographs are the first I’ve ever taken of this woodpecker. I have not seen one in our local woods although they are said to be quite common in our area. We spotted him while on a road trip earlier in the summer. The bird was a handsome one but tricky to take because of the light conditions. I had to open up the shadows, remove the colour cast and adjust the luminance and saturation. He was quite close to us and our presence didn’t bother him so we managed to make the most of our brief encounter.

  1. Wonderful images of this very special bird! The full body photo is especially remarkable for it’s clarity and lighting. I have tried several times to get a good shot of a yellow-bellied sapsucker… A real challenge.

  2. Congrats on the opportunity and lucky you for his/her patience, they are so flighty and usually jump around the tree out of sight when spotted! Great shots, Belinda! 🙂

  7. Nice captures, Belinda. We had a pair nesting in an oak across the road from us this summer. Oh, so noisy they can be! Esp. drumming at dawn. 😉

A lot of so-called common birds aren’t all that common!

  12. Very nice, Belinda, and the texture of the bark adds to the scene! The ones I have seen have been at a neck-craning angle, adding to the challenge.

  15. I know I’ve had that struggle with the bright sky behind and everything else relatively dark. But this turned out pretty good!
