Two mallards enjoying the calm before the snow begins. When I took these photos last week we were enjoying a mild stretch, the ducks seemed to like it too. As I write this, wet snow is falling. Although most ducks will fly off soon, a hardy few persevere throughout the winter. No snowbirds (Canadians who head south for the winter) are they.

Great shots, Belinda! This summer, i saw two male Mallards hanging together as if they were a couple, which is a bit different but these days anything flies! 🙂

We sweltered in the 46 degree Celsius heat today – can only hope for cooler weather to follow. I love your mallards!

These are some of your best photos, Belinda. Maybe it’s the emotion attached to first snowflakes, but that first photo evoked a lot of feelings for me. First – oh how pretty, and then, the poor duck is in for some hard times. He looks in good shape to get through the winter though and with any luck he’ll be around for you to photograph next spring. The hen mallard also looks in good shape. Lovely composition with the smooth water and the reflection adding a special touch. Love these two photos!

Thank you for your generous comments Anneli.
I do love these ducks. I hoped the male would swim up and show off those amazing feet! I’ll be back in the coming weeks to see how they’re doing.

He looks quite sturdy, doesn’t he? I always wonder how they stand the cold in bare feet. I think most birds have it right – fly south! 😉

And extremely adaptable.
I like the southern route myself!

Both handsome birds well captured. So hard to imagine you are having snow already, especially as here in South Africa we are currently experiencing a country-wide heatwave.

Thank you. Hard for us to imagine too😏. Happily it melted as it hit the ground.

Thanks. I don’t think so, I photographed them at different ends of the lake.

I love the photos! Ducks are so awesome. Michiganders who head south from Michigan for the winter are also called snowbirds. Along with other states in the northeast. Love my palm trees.
