STOPS ALONG THE WAY

DOWNY WOODPECKER

I heard her before I saw this downy woodpecker. She was drilling away for insects as I was walking by. As is often the case, you will hear a bird before you see it. Unlike her male counterpart which has a small red cap, the female downy does not but other than that they look pretty much alike.

Lovely image. Similar to the sadly declining lesser spotted woodpecker we have here in the UK.

This is much cuter than the woodpecker we currently have pecking around our house. Very nice photo.

It’s amazing how big these tiny woodpeckers can send when they’re tapping away on trees!

What a fantastic woodpecker. A bit similar to our Great Spotted Woodpecker.
I once saw a Pied Woodpecker in South Africa which was huge.

Lovely! We saw many woodpeckers of many kinds on a recent birding trip. I’ve never looked it up, but I wonder if this is a particularly active season for woodpeckers? I suppose it is, here in this warmer climate, for most birds, so logical that woodpeckers would be prevalent too, I guess.

How lovely to see one out in the open as it were to get an unobstructed photograph – a lovely one at that!

Woodpeckers are special. They have such different habits from most other birds. Beautiful colours.
