Queen Anne’s Lace is everywhere right now. In fields, vacant lots, on roadsides, wherever there’s sun and a bit of earth. It’s classified as an invasive weed but it also produces this lovely flower. In the fall the flower dries and takes on the appearance of a “bird’s-nest”, its colour complementing the landscape.

Lovely shots, Belinda. One of our nicest wildflowers, esp. with blue chicory.

Did you know that Queen Anne’s Lace is the wild carrot, daucus carota? I’ve heard it is the origin of our cultivated carrot, but don’t quote me on that because I’m not a botanist. I know I’ve pulled up Queen Anne’s Lace and it has a white carrot-like root that smells just like a carrot. But you want to be careful to make sure it really is Queen Anne’s Lace and not poison hemlock which looks similar. I find Queen Anne’s Lace a very pretty plant. Your photos do the “lace” aspect justice.

Thank you Anneli. I know it belongs to the carrot family and looks quite similar to poison hemlock.

I was surprised at how much like a carrot the root smells. Very pretty plant.

Nice Images Belinda! The BW image is different and you almost see more detail in the flowers. Never thought of B&W for flowers! Great idea!

Wonderful photos Belinda, I love this plant. I remember it as a child in Michigan, it’s everywhere like you said! I like your description of the dried plant as a birds nest. Nice! 😍
