Like most urban centres, Ottawa is going through a transformation. The old wooden house is flush against a modern apartment unit. The new structure is not a high-rise like some buildings going up and is quite attractive but it changes the feel of the neighbourhood and with it raises the question of what we’re losing as a result.

Wow, that’s really something. Is the old house still used as a single family home or any kind of dwelling, for that matter? This is a pretty common sight in Seattle which has experienced unprecedented population growth and urban in-fill the past ten years but it’s a little more surprising to see it certain other places, like Ottawa.

Yes, it’s still a single family home. Our small town-feel city is subject to the same pressures 😏

All glass and steel – this can never replace the natural weathering of wood, stone and brick – never mind the gardens.

We all lose something in the end. Growth is a delicate balance that rarely goes well in the end.

There are several projects here where the facades of old buildings are incorporated into new construction. One positive in all this.

They are trying to keep the old southern buildings in Charleston the same way. Problem here is we are on a peninsula and greed came with the tourist. More new hotels than people, residents can’t afford the town, and the southern charm is fast leaving. We can’t keep double size and tourist and have the same city.

They’ll lose what they hoped to capitalize on. A real shame.

Yes, what are we losing? It’s not something that’s given much thought these days.

I don’t think modern architecture will be looked at in the same way as these older buildings in the years to come. 😏

No, it certainly won’t have the “character.”
