This building once housed a tavern built in 1909, it’s now a fine restaurant. Over a side door, it has retained a sign from a time when women required an escort to enter a bar. Another find on a walk through the city.
I laughed at that sign. It reminds me of a time a student friend and I, feeling really thirsty after a hectic game of squash, walked from campus to the so-called ladies bar at the hotel. We were ignored by the waiter (one couldn’t actually get into the actual bar area) who, when we finally collared him, explained that he had been waiting for out ‘gentlemen friends’ to join us. We got our drink but were not impressed by the attitude of the establishment.
I may be dating myself, but I remember those signs. I remember being annoyed about them. I suppose there was a good reason for ladies needing an escort, but the implication is also that women had no business being in a bar unless a man said it was okay and he was there to “protect” you. Maybe it was the men’s behaviour that needed fixing. Anyway, interesting picture. Very pretty door.
It wasn’t really that long ago, it is hard to believe though. The current restaurant is in a part of town that is undergoing gentrification. A walk there is always eye opening.

Well, those were the days… I’m usually monochrome first, but I love the color version, Belinda.

Unlike the song 😏. I prefer the colour version too. Thank you, Jane.
