When the Black-crowned night herons first return in the spring, we usually spot them high up in the trees. If we see one at the water’s edge it usually takes flight. The one pictured here was photographed later in the season and the fishing was good. It looked up to stare at us and then continued about its business.

Great captures at this low angle, Belinda, and head on! It is fun to find such a willing subject.

A month or so can make quite a difference in their reaction to us. Thank you, Ellen!

Thanks, Indira! I have several more of this bird, some I’ve featured earlier. It was in no hurry to move on.

Beautiful image and the algae on water adds to the frame. Got chance to photograph this beauty only once.

That’s a different angle for a heron photo. Usually we see photos of them looking sideways. This angle gives them a completely different look. He has a look as if he was caught in the act. You’re so lucky to have a chance to see them up close without them flying off.

There are certain narrow coves that are prime fishing spots. Lucky for us because we can get quite close. He does look like he’s up to something 😊

I would love to be able to get that close and not have them fly off.
