I took these photos early last fall. It was a good year for these brilliantly coloured bees. The first was taken in the woods and the second in a neighbourhood garden, both with my 300 mm lens, which I often use for close ups like these. It keeps me at a comfortable distance from stinging insects although these bees are usually too busy feeding to pay me any attention.

These look like half bee, half fly! Great close-ups!

Nice, crisp captures, Belinda! Those purple flowers made the perfect setting for these shiny fellows.

Thank you, Ellen! It seems bees are quite partial to purple, it certainly attracted these two.

Was reading an article a few days ago where the photographer use a 300mm lens with extension tubes for his close ups of dragonflies. He sometimes adds a 1.4 teleconver. Was interesting reading, if I can find his link I’ll post it your comments.
His set up allows him to keep distance between him and his subject.

It’s a great lens for close up photos. I’d be interested in seeing the link, thanks.

I’ve seen these Agapostemon bees with fair regularity in northern Minnesota, and I always get a thrill of pleasure when our paths cross. Their green sheen really does look metallic!

I’m only learning to appreciate the beauty of insects. They are not just pests to be slapped at or ignored or sprayed or stepped on. You’ve shown us their beautiful side and I’m impressed every time I see one of your insect photos. Great job, Belinda.
