I caught sight of the red-winged blackbird in the half light of the woods. The female seems to prefer to remain in the background or on her own unlike the more flamboyant male who sings his tune for all to hear. 😊
Belinda, I saw this little bird a few weeks ago and I didn’t know what kind of bird it was. This morning I learned from your post that a bird I saw was a female red-winged blackbird.
Love how you photographed this cute little bird!

I never knew the males were the only red winged ones!

Her camouflage is perfect for staying hidden. She looks a bit like an oversized sparrow!

The first time I saw one, I wondered if it might be a sparrow too.

Funny how with humans it’s just the opposite. It’s the women who dress in flashy colours and wear jewelry to attract attention.

In the bird world the numbers are in the females’ favour; the males sport the fancier plumage to attract them.

Thank you, Kaya. The first time I saw one, I didn’t know what it was either. It’s so different from the male.

A very nice catch, but I can’t get over the feeling that she’s somewhat incensed at something that’s happening down where she’s looking!
