The hairy woodpecker is larger than the downy with a longer bill but their colouring is very similar. This fellow was working his way up and down the tree trunk, in and out of sight. I caught him as he came back into view.
Lovely photo! I’ve seen a few of these little guys while travelling in North America. We have two spotted species here in the UK, the smaller of which is quite similar to downy / hairy woodpeckers. But it’s rare and likes hiding in the tops of trees.
He’s so sleek. Not a hair (feather) out of place. They often look a bit more ruffled (just a tiny bit). This one looks like he preened in front of the mirror. He makes me think of my nephew when he was six, patting his cheeks with some Buckaroo aftershave for his first day of school.
It was one of the cheaper ones from many years ago. That nephew is now 41. His mom let him slap some on so he’d feel grown up going to his first day of school.
We see these guys in northern Minnesota too. I am fascinated by their ability to maneuver about on vertical surfaces as if they were walking on an iron-rich surface and wearing magnetic shoes.

Nice shot, Belinda. We have a nesting pair across the road from us. They certainly are vocal! 🙂

You’re right, they’re usually a bit more wind blown. Never heard of Buckaroo aftershave.😏
