This wood duck was taken last fall, before they all flew south for the winter.I’ve noticed that unlike most ducks that tend to stick together, the female wood duck is often on her own above the fray.
The wood duck is pretty, of course, but what I really loved about this photo is all the intricate detail on the log and the water and plants surrounding it. Every leaf and bit of moss or slime or ripple is like a piece of a big nature puzzle that fits together perfectly.

She is very sweet even if she is not as flashy as her mate. Great capture!

Nice Belinda! I have also noticed that Wood Ducks seem to go their own ways usually! Hard to get images of them close together.

You did a great job of demonstrating how she appears “above the fray” here, Belinda. Lovely photo.

Wonderfully put, Anneli! This reserve is the one I referred to in my comment on your lupine post. It is a beautiful place.

Tnx, Belinda. I would love to explore this reserve (but then I’d be another of those many people)! Shudders!

Smart girl, and what lovely surroundings. Nice framing with the log, vegetation on the left, and lily pads in the background.
