A gardener friend introduced me to these insects a few years ago. She had seen a hummingbird moth at a nursery and I joined her the next time she went. I saw one that day and most summers since. Hovering as they go from flower to flower they do live up to their name.

So amazing! Do you know which type of hummingbird moth it is?

Lovely shot! I’m fascinated by these insects. It’s been a few years since I have seen one, but I remember the first one in my parents garden many years ago like it was yesterday. Great that you caught that beautiful pink under-wing.

Wow – your second photograph shows it off so well! Isn’t it strange the way once we have been introduced to something we become more aware of its existence – the same applies to meeting people too.

Thank you, Reed! I think because I never see more than one or two a year make them particularly special.

Your second shot is spectacular, Belinda. Am I right in assuming that it was hovering when you made the photo, or had it perched on a structure that’s not immediately apparent? Whichever, my first compliment still stands.

They are amazing in the way that they can maneuver their long tongue in the air while flying. It’s not easy to freeze these movements in the picture, but I think you succeeded really well. Congratulations!
