MUSKRAT

Muskrat

You can see how the muskrat got its name. It has quite the tail. Like the beaver the muskrat uses its tail as a rudder and slaps it when it senses danger. They are terrific swimmers and when they dive it’s difficult to determine where they will resurface.

  1. Great capture! I haven’t thought about muskrats in a long time. Seeing this made me think about the song ‘Muskrat Love’ by The Captain and Tennille! I looked up the lyrics. They don’t make much sense to me … here is the first verse!
    Muskrat, Muskrat, candle light
Doing the town and doing it right in the evening
    It’s pretty pleasing
    Muskrat Suzie, Muskrat Sam
Do the jitterbug out in Muskrat Land
And they shimmy… Sam is so skinny

  2. I hardly ever see these anymore. There were far more of them years ago. Nice shot, Belinda!

  3. Muskrat Susie, Muskrat Sam, do the jitterbug … an old America favourite along with Ventura Highway and Horse With No Name 🙂 Lovely photo, Belinda! You caught him just right! Perfect timing 🙂

  4. They’re kind of cute except for the rat tail. Nice photo.

  5. Haha…song in my head, too. I love his playful look and I never connected the “rat” part of his name.
