I took this photo in October of last year. I’m not sure if this is a female goldfinch or a male in non breeding colours. Either way, an attractive bird in a thoughtful pose.
They seem to be nomadic in winter, descending on the feeders for a few days before moving off to another to return and start the cycle again. Though they stuck around for the past couple months eating the sunflower seeds on the plants in the garden. It was a daily chorus!

I have not learned to tell the difference between a pine siskin and a winter goldfinch.

They do look similar. A tough call.

Nice Belinda! Reminds me of my old home with a pond! Many Goldfinches liked splashing in the water’s shallow edge.

Looking very pensive–maybe he (or she) is having daydreams about what life would be like as a heron.
