The barred owl or hoot owl is very common in Ontario though I’ve only seen one twice. Like most owls they are nocturnal but both my sightings were during the day. This owl was just slightly off the main path, I happened to look up and there he was.

    Amazing capture! Owls are so interesting and intrigue me greatly. We have some nearby and hear them conversing. Unfortunately, they are rather secretive and we have yet to see them.

    Where I worked for many years was on the edge of one town with a connecting “country road” to another town. On the way home down that road one day, I noticed what looked like a bunch of leaves or a garbage bag perched on the telephone wires. People were stopping to look. As I got closer and stopped, I realized what they did. It was a big barn owl. It was a treat to see and an equally great treat to see how many people stopped to appreciate such a rare and majestic sight.

    Great capture!! We are fortunate to have a nesting pair each year. With COVID quiet last March, you could easily hear them over the din of morning singers. (The recording is embedded in my last post.) My son is even so good at vocalizing their call, he‘ll get answered. Fun stuff.
