The downy woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America. We see them all year round. If you hear a tapping sound in the woods it’s likely a downy going about its business.

What a priceless image. When I lived in Canada I could hear the woodpecker in our backyard but never seen one up close. Thank you for sharing.

I’ve seen them (and heard them!) in a nest up high in a snag. The noise the little ones make is deafening if you’re standing right there under the snag. They’re pretty little birds. The one in your photo looks quite young. Fluffy downy feathers. So sweet and innocent looking.
