I took this photo in late September when the Cardinal hadn’t finished moulting. He’ll need those head feathers now given the cold temperatures!

Birds do have a classic look in moulting season! I wonder if it affects their aerodynamics at all when they try to fly? They are usually very quiet here in late summer.

They do😏.
If it’s a gradual moult I don’t think their ability to fly is effected.

Cardinals and blue jays always look a bit rough during moulting. They make up for it in time! I love seeing that stunning red plumage, esp. in winter.
