This is a young snapping turtle, mature snapping turtles are much larger and even less good looking 😏. I was standing on a viewing platform and just happened to glance down when the turtle swam silently by.

Never actually seen a snapper in water before – most of my encounters are trying to coerce the mature (monster) ones out of my landscaping without getting bitten.

I’m very familiar with these big mean critters. Years ago when I did commercial yard work, I would come upon these guys resting on the banks along the cricks while I was mowing. I had to grab a big stick and prod them to jump back in the water so I could mow that spot. All the while the critters were hissing at me! Never got bit though!
