It was listed as a novel for grade sevens to read, and one that I read to my grade four classes. They loved it. So did I, looking at it from a child’s point of view. And then I was left thinking about it forever afterwards. What would I do to survive alone on an island?

I’ve had a soft spot for cormorants ever since I read Scott O’Dell’s Y/A book, “Island of the Blue Dolphins.”

I should add to my last comment, she made a skirt of cormorant feathers that was preserved at the Mission until 1906 when it was lost in the quake.
