The temperature still dips at night and the daytime highs are struggling to reach 20Cs/68F but the sun is warm and the turtles have started to reappear. This painted turtle continues to wear a familiar grumpy expression too.
I’m realizing how important it was for us to have pets when we were children. One of ours was Georgie, a red-eared turtle, and I have loved turtles ever since. This reminds me of our turtle so much. Of course ours was quite small.
I think kids having pets can lead to a lifelong appreciation of the natural world. The turtle in the photo was quite small, I’ve seen some quite a bit larger.
We always had pets (fish, turtles, hamsters, gerbils, dogs, cats) and my brother and sisters and I have all grown up with a love for animals. I think it’s a really important thing for children to learn to love and care for animals. As you said “a lifelong appreciation of the natural world.”

I really like this photo a lot, Belinda. And the turtle-head reflection is especially charming.

We always had a variety of pets too. I wish more kids did.
