We visited one of Ottawa’s water filtration plants at a Doors Open event last summer. The Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant opened in 1932 and is a wonderful limestone structure with fine brass work and marble galleries. I’ve visited several times and can’t help but be impressed by the beauty of a building that houses a public utility.Water Plant-2Water Plant

    It’s interesting how the design is so beautiful and well preserved after 88 years but the doors tell the story. They look well used! And yet, I think there’s a good chance that the doors have been replaced or at least upgraded since 1932. Do you know if they have? Or are they the original doors?

    They built with such character back in those days, even utility buildings. The designs and details are beautiful. Lovely photos, Belinda.

    In this Country all the old public works buildings from Victorian times, like water treatment works, are very ornate unlike today’s purely functional offerings. I guess back then money was no object or we have a different view on what is ‘nice’ architecture.
