
I took this photo at the beginning of April a few years ago. The water had begun to thaw so I imagine he found something to eat. I had never seen a heron return this early before or since; usually they wait until the ice has melted and the locals come out.

Great capture, Belinda. 😊 I love watching herons. They are the most amazing stalkers! A couple of years ago I got some pictures of a heron stalking and catching a salmon.

I’ve seen them catch frogs, dragonflies and some fish but a salmon, now that must have been something!!

It was a smallish salmon – about a kg – but was swallowed whole in the blink of an eye!
