The Black-crowned night herons did not pass through in great numbers last summer. I was happy to spot this bird as he fished. We were standing close by but the heron was focussed on what he was doing and paid no attention to us. We waited for him to catch something but he wasn’t having much luck. We got the better of the deal coming away with a slew of shots.

Night Herons are definitely among my favourites! I love the grays and dark head plume and those orange eyes!! Liking very much the texture of its perch too!!

Gorgeous bird and perfect photos! I don’t know if it’s my screen but is it navy coloured on the top feathers?

Thank you Laura. I believe the reflection of the water gives the heron a blue cast.

A golden opportunity and you certainly made the most of it! These images are exceptional and much appreciated because I don’t see this species, or many images of it.

I saw many of these herons in Taiwan but never got such a good photo. Your photos are always impressively sharp with a lot of depth of field. I wonder how and what lens you use and if you use a tripod. I like the snail too, so sharp, wow:)

Thank you very much. I was shooting with a 70-200 at F5 without a tripod.
