One of my first blog posts featured a male mallard on the same lake just as the ice was beginning to form. This is another of the shots I took that day. The lighting was particularly nice as the duck gingerly made her way along the ice. I thought the shot would lend itself to black and white and I used Tonality Pro in Photoshop to create the monochrome version. This is one of my first photos in black and white and I will do more in the future as I find it can make for a more detailed and nuanced image.

They are tip toeing! I’m chuckling. They are such great shots.

Love both shots, Belinda and you did a great job with the black and white conversion in post. It’s very effective in monochrome.

Black and white helps the eye focus on pattern and design and this photo lends itself very well to that.

I like the color version best because of the blue water, the light on her back and feet, and the reflection of her is clearer. What a lovely, and delightful image!
I imagine even with webbed feet they still slip and slide on the ice just like we do. 🙂
B&W is fun. I think you’re on your way to creating some wonderful monochrome images!

Thank you very much! I do like the nuance of B&W and will continue with it. Mallards are comical to watch as they navigate the ice😊

The duck itself is nice in black and white but I like the blue colours of the ice in the first picture.
