In going through my catalogues of photos to decide on today’s post, I came across these photographs that I took in July. The air was thick with all kinds of dragonflies and damselflies then. Now in October, when the sun is at its warmest, there is still the odd one to be seen. The tail end of the season is always bittersweet but looking at these photos goes no small way in bringing back the pleasure and the warmth of the summer that has just ended.

Such great detail! Especially in that second shot. Even the little hairs on the legs are sharp!

A long time ahead without dragonflies or other insects so if it is up to me you can do this more often troughout the wintertime. This one is a real beautiful one.

You’re right, photos help keep summer fresh in our minds. Nice clear shots, too.

Those big eyes can make the shots every time, and especially their sharpness.

I love watching the dragonflies, but have never managed to take a single photo that compares to your images. Such clarity and such detail!

The trick is to focus on one individual. Often when it gets startled off its perch, it will return to the same spot moments later at which point I snap away. Glad you like these!

What type of lens do you use for these, Belinda? I nearly always have my 100-400 mm lens, not the best for getting clear close-up insect shots!

I had my 105mm with flash and soft box that day. I usually get pretty good results with this set up.
