I had planned on taking birds in flight or waterfowl when I spotted these downy woodpeckers. Downies usually move quickly up and down a tree, pecking away until they find a spot with insects. These two, although moving fast, did pause for a bit. I had my 300mm lens with me which got me quite close to them. I like a bit more space around my subjects but I think the birds’ poses added some interest.

So cute. You’re right about their poses! What characters they are. I’ve heard them calling loudly from the nest to tell their mothers to hurry up with the food. It could drive a person crazy to listen to them, but they really are so entertaining.

Thank you. I’ve never seen them in the nest calling to be fed, must be quite the sight!

It was more like the sound than the sight that was impressive. It is a “drive-you-crazy” sound because it doesn’t seem to stop, and it’s very powerful for such a small bird. The ones we heard and saw were in a nest (a hole) in a dead tree at the end of a trail by Unwin Lake north of Powell River on the west coast. You could not have passed by and not noticed them.

Sounds a bit deafening but well worth the price of admission I suspect😊
