I took these photos in May as the Grackles were migrating through. I’ve yet to see them in the fall although I’m sure they fly through as they head south. I usually spot them along the shoreline, half hidden by branches looking for food. I was lucky in this case as the bird was out in the open. Grackles are gregarious birds, if you see one they’re usually in the company of more. A striking bird with its iridescent plumage and yellow eyes.

From what you say, the grackles you see are migratory. Here in central Texas, grackles (Quiscalus mexicanus) seem to be year-round residents. At least a few can usually be seen in supermarket parking lots scrounging for dropped bits of food.

Yes they are and I’ve only ever seen them foraging in woodlands.

A fun bird to photograph, trying to catch the sun on their iridescent colors. Great captures, Belinda! I like the added splash of red leaves and blues in the water.

These or their cousins live here (Austin area) all year round. They are not very afraid of people. They commonly swarm my bird feeder with the doves. Their feathers do have this iridescent effect when hit with direct sunlight. Pretty

Don’t think I have ever seen this species before. What a treat, and lovely photos.
Oh, btw. You know why birds fly South, don’t you, Belinda?
Because it’s too far to walk.

Very nice, Belinda! That blue iridescence is wonderful and those red sprouts on the tree trunk make a nice accent.

Thank you Ellen! I was lucky, as grackles often like to play hide and seek.
