The first photo was taken in the fall and the second barely a month later; the landscape changes rapidly with the seasons. Red squirrels can be found all year long and seem to shadow you in the winter when food is scarce. In the photo below the squirrel found the seeds that someone had left and stayed put as I approached. I didn’t want to disturb him, so I took this photo and then left him to his meal.

Lovely photos. Living in much milder climes, it amazes me that such small creatures have adapted to survive the long snowy winters. I am not sure that I would cope with such cold!! Keep warm and enjoy the holidays.

Thank you Carol. They prepare well for our winters but they’re still pretty remarkable given the temperature extremes. Best wishes for the New Year!

Nice contrast between the two and a cute portrait of the second one using his hands to eat.

Lovely, noisy little things! Pound for pound, they are probably the most powerful personalities in the forest. Always enjoy watching them – and love your photos too 🙂

I always enjoy seeing them chase the much larger greys. Thank you Adele!

Wow, what a difference there is in this one month. The squirrel seems redder in the second one, and of course the earth is vastly different. Lovely to see both photos. Happy holiday wishes to you, Belinda.

Red Squirrels? Amazing.
I never saw one while living in the UK.

I’m unfamiliar with their range in Britain but they’re quite widespread in North America.

When i was younger living in the UK I read that at one point the Grey almost drove the Red to extinction.
I don’t know the situation now.

I’m a British wildlife scientist. Our red squirrel is actually a different (and unrelated) species to the North American red squirrel. It is distributed across Europe and into Russia though. In England, the situation is still bad but they survive in the north and on some small islands. But it is thought that the recent recovery of the pine marten – a large member of the weasel family – is likely to reduce grey squirrel numbers through predation, and allow the reds to possibly recover some of their range.
