This cute little rodent is a relative of the mouse and is commonly called a vole or field mouse. It’s the only one I’ve ever seen and I was able to take a number of photographs as he was unaware of or unconcerned by my presence. He might have been a young animal that had not yet developed a sense of fear. I watched him for a while and then left him to his ramble.

Voles may be destructive, but they sure are cute. Sweet capture, Belinda!

Nice when they cooperate, isn’t it? They are smarter than we give them credit. If you linger long enough without imposing, some eventually will ignore you as benevolent. Even longer? A kind of ‘trust’ sets in.

Yes indeed. A quiet presence and respectful distance is often all it takes.

How fortunate you were able to watch and photograph him or her, they’re often so skittish and quick to disappear. Wonderful photo, Belinda.

He doesn’t seem to have any ears, or they’re tucked in under a lot of fur. How big are they compared to a mouse? Cute little guy.

They’re about the same length although a vole is plumper and has smaller eyes and ears. He is a cute one.

First time I’ve ever seen one! We had them one year in our yard, they tore it up with all their tunnels. No longer a problem, so this image is cute! 😉

They’re cute in the wild, not the case in your garden. Thanks Donna!
