Downy Woodpeckers are the smallest of the woodpeckers and quite numerous. We enjoy them year round. They don’t cache food but survive the winter by excavating the trees for overwintering insects. They are also a frequent visitor to bird feeders.
Nice capture! We used to get these and the larger Hairy Woodpeckers when we lived in South Jersey. I haven’t see them here in Colorado but we do see their relative, a Sapsucker every once in a while. I am not sure who makes noise hammering on our house from time to time!
I love the Downy Woodpeckers. They come every fall to pick the bugs out of the nicks and crannies on the outside of my house in the country. Very much appreciated!
Such sweet little birds… there was one just this morning looking for insects on our front porch railing. We put the feeders up yesterday and there was so much activity all day today!
Downy woodpeckers are really fun to watch, I’m glad you have them year-round, Belinda. We have them year-round too, but they never come to the feeders. I think because it’s milder here in No. Calif. than where you are. This is a lovely photo…so intimate.

Thank you, Jet. We love to see them on our winter walks. They’re one of several species that can tolerate the cold.

They are so pretty, but what a racket they can make! I’ve heard the babies calling for food from their nest in a snag.

What a pretty portrait, in perfect pose. I’ve missed the woodpeckers this year (there are none here in NZ).

WonderfuL, I recall that pecking sound many years ago in Michigan, in winter, sitting still on a stump and just letting go. 🥰
