I took several several photos of the cardinal on the ground and when it flew into the trees. In late summer they seem more relaxed around people; their young have left the nest and they’re less wary. Nice for me.
What a wonderful sighting, Belinda! I’ve never seen one, but oh how I would love to. I had hoped to see one when I went to NYC a few years ago, but didn’t.
Such a stunning bird, esp. in winter. I’m surprised you have them that far north. And to think when we were kids, they were considered a ‘southern’ bird. I just had 5 at my feeder today. What a sight!
It might be either the light or my imagination. I seem to remember you showing us a cardinal much redder or brighter than this one before. Do their colours fade as the breeding season nears it end?

Thank you, Deborah! They’re quite common here but always a pleasure to see.

There’s a bird here that very closely imitates the cardinal’s “What cheer!” and it catches me off guard every time.

I bet. Is it similar in appearance?

As far as I know they don’t fade out of season. It might have been the light or I shot through a leaf…

This one is so pretty with the muted colours. Very soft look.

Thanks, Anneli. I’m not sure what caused that soft look but It lends itself well to this composition, I think.

I thought maybe you had done it on purpose. It gives a very soothing effect. I like it a lot.
