I usually see pileated woodpeckers high up in the trees, often hearing them before I see them. It’s easier to spot them in winter when there are no leaves to block the view.

Great shot! The show Sunday Morning just replayed the episode about the rediscovery of the thought to be extinct, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, in Arkansas in 2005.

Nice capture of this beauty next to his handi-work, Belinda. I’m always fascinated by how perfect their holes are. Like you, I hear them way more than I see them.

We think of him as the Woody Woodpecker bird (as opposed to other woodpeckers).
