I usually see pileated woodpeckers high up in the trees, often hearing them before I see them. It’s easier to spot them in winter when there are no leaves to block the view.
Great shot! The show Sunday Morning just replayed the episode about the rediscovery of the thought to be extinct, Ivory-billed Woodpecker, in Arkansas in 2005.
Nice capture of this beauty next to his handi-work, Belinda. I’m always fascinated by how perfect their holes are. Like you, I hear them way more than I see them.

I like how the backlighting highlights the blaze of red on its crest. Such elusive birds – good catch, Belinda!

This is a terrific photo, Belinda. How wonderful that you had the chance to see one, and photograph it too. The sun on her head is a special treat.

How lovely to photograph this woodpecker right next to two holes – well, one whole hole and one in the making (couldn’t resist that!).

I don’t see them too often, so it’s nice when I do. Their call is very distinctive!

We think of him as the Woody Woodpecker bird (as opposed to other woodpeckers).
