American Black Duck

We see quite a few American Black Ducks during the warmer months. They resemble female mallards though they’re darker and their bills are yellow, they are also heavier than mallards. They seem less rowdy too but perhaps that’s because there are fewer of them. 😏

Nice close-up, Belinda! These ducks love our winter Chesapeake Bay marshes, impoundments, and creeks.

Wow, great sighting! I’ve only seen one once. That’s a nice profile portrait of this one, Belinda.

They are very pretty ducks and yes, much quieter too although as you point out they’re probably overshadowed by the mallards. I see a few of here in town during summer but more of them up at the mountain ponds. A best picture, Belinda.

They have a real greenish tinge to their yellow bills. I like the eyeliner. Very pretty duck.
