FEMALE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD

FEMALE BLACKBIRDThe first time I photographed a female red-winged blackbird I wasn’t sure what it was. Its looks and temperament differ greatly from the male. It has a subtler beauty and it tends to stay in the shadows while the male is out in the open singing its heart out.

Great detail, Belinda, the female’s colors are so pretty! I had the exact same thing happen to me, I didn’t know what kind of bird it was that I photographed.

A modest, yet lovely bird. I marvel at their sharp beaks!

Yes, the females can be difficult to identify. I really like this photo, Belinda, you captured her markings and beauty well.

Lovely shot. Belinda. I agree that it looks a little ‘shaggy’, a bit more like a young bird. Young female?

It looks like it might be a young bird. Is that possible? Small and a bit scruffy? The wing feathers don’t seem to be fully developed yet. Very pretty little thing though.
