STOPS ALONG THE WAY

HOODED MERGANSER

MerganserWe don’t see many hooded mergansers. When we do, they’re usually too far away to get a decent photo. This female was closer to shore than usual, she was on her own, no other ducks in sight. When she saw me, she swam away but I did manage to get this parting shot.

Although she turned her back on you, she had the decency to slightly show a part of her head. This turns it into a beautiful capture.

What a treat! Hopefully, a male comes along to keep her company.

We get American Mergansers on our small river, and occasionally, mallards. It would be neat to see a Hooded. You get so many more ducks in your area, it seems. Have you noticed many returning?

I just logged my first Hooded a couple weeks ago down here on the gulf coast. A young male without the fancy head gear.
