GREEN HERON

I watched as the green heron carefully scanned the water looking for a passing fish. It watched, it patrolled, and waited some more. All the herons I’ve photographed are the most patient of fishermen, more patient than this photographer. I took some photos and left the bird as I continued my walk.

A wonderful photograph. I’ve seen many great blues, of course, and some whites (aka great egret), and a few black-crowned night herons, but never a green. I’ll be kayaking on the Jordan River in the morning and hope to see some herons.

Nice portrait, Belinda. One does have to admire that kind of patience… I know I don’t possess it!

Great capture of this beauty, Belinda! And so right on the patience thing, of course what else do they have to do? 😁

And there you have captured that famous lip lap, the Green Heron trademark. They have this habit of lapping their bill. The only bird I know to do this. Very nice.

I have yet to see one in the wild, but I hope to. The patience of these wading birds almost rivals that of spiders.

Your patience – like mine, MUCH shorter than that of any heron – was rewarded. This is a magnificent portrayal of the Green Heron!
