I almost missed seeing this little meadow vole or field mouse as it quietly moved through the leaf litter. If it sensed my presence it didn’t show it.

We had a lot of these when we lived in Southern New Jersey. They used to eat everything I planted. It is unusual to see them above ground. When my son was little he tried to capture one in his bug catcher. Nice capture Belinda!

I have to cage my woody shrubs in the fall to keep them from being girdled by gnawing. This winter they managed to chew a mature stand of Yucca down to nubs – argh!
